GET INVOLVED
DATA REFUGE 2.0
It’s been more than 100 days since we launched Data Refuge in Philadelphia in late November, 2016. Since then, we’ve been so encouraged by the work of the thousands of volunteers who have participated in over 40 local Data Rescue events. It's been a pleasure to help support these events, together with folks at Environmental Data Governance Initiative.
Data Refuge continues to grow! As we move into a new phase, we are focusing our energies in three areas:
- Supporting Data Rescue events that
- help people assess valuable and vulnerable data within their communities and "rescue" those data by making trustworthy copies. These can be put into the www.datarefuge.org repository
- work to tell the stories of data, because facts can't speak for themselves
- continue on "the long path," i.e., design and implement sustainable efforts to support persistent preserva tion and access to federal data
- Collaborating with the Association of Research Libraries and Mozilla Foundation to host a meeting designed to launch Libraries Plus Network, an emergent network of collaborators intent on building sustainable structures for the incredible outpouring of volunteer labor and energy that has been so inspiring. Data Refuge is joined in this effort by a whole lot of institutions and organizations committed to working on cross-sector solutions to preserve federal data and to increase its accessibility to an array of communities. Other participants hail from libraries and archives, research communities, open data and open science organizations, federal agencies, science advocacy, etc. For more info, check out http://libraries.network.
- Expand our Storytelling initiative, "Three Stories in Our Town," with support announced April 20th from the National Geographic. For more information about this nascent project and how to get involved please contact director@ppehlab.org
